Al and Sally Alonzo
Al and Sally Alonzo capped off another busy year in which they were selected as the council’s Family of the Month for December. At least those are the names that we have come to know them by. They were born as Bayani and Salvacion in their native Philippines, which is almost 1,000 miles east of Vietnam. They were married in 1965 and came to the United States in 1969. That’s when Al began working at American colleges – Community Colleges of St. Louis, Southern Illinois and Illinois State. The first of their two stints as residents of Duncanville started in 1973 and allowed them to be among our parish’s founding families a year later. Al and Sally retired in 2004 following their careers with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. AAFES relocated them to Europe from the late 1970s until 1991, when they returned to Duncanville. They attend daily Mass, serve as Eucharistic Minister captains for the 5:30 Mass, have been Zone Shepherds since that portion of Community Life was started and are active in the Fil-Am Group (which hosted the parish’s annual Simbang Gabi celebration in late December). Al is also a Hospitality Minister and, soon after becoming a Knight in 2011, offered his considerable talents as a photographer and Facebook devotee as part of the council’s Awareness Committee. The Alonzos have two grown children, both sons. Vincent lives in Allen while Allen – who joined the council when Al did – also lives in Duncanville.
