Family of the Month – June 2025

Mike and Susan Fitzgerald

Brother Mike Fitzgerald suspects that he received Family of the Month because of his retiring from the office of Grand Knight on the first of July and handing it over to Brother Marc Evans.  Mike’s wife Susan made quite a showing for the month as she volunteered to do the decorating and food preparation for the Knights dinner, complimenting the two of them as a team and a force to be reckoned with.  Mike says that he is proud of having served as the council’s Grand Knight, as it is a surprisingly time consuming position.  Susan has been named regent for the Catholic Daughters of America which will be a time consuming position for her as well.  Brother Mike and Susan met on a blind date and then were married in November of 1980 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church here in Dallas. Mike was working downtown and would attend mass at the downtown cathedral, but wasn’t too fond of the Spanish mass.  He retired in January 2017 from Insurance coverage for marine/aviation vessels – physical damage to ocean barges, cargoes, and yachts.  Mike is from Northern Minnesota while Susan is from Texas.  They have 3 kids; Rita, Thomas, and Becky.  Between the 3 kids are 14 grandchildren.  Rita-5, Thomas-2, Becky-7.  They used to travel once a year up to Minnesota with the kids as well.  Mike and Susan had a home in DeSoto and then moved to Ovilla where they have 10 acres of very narrow pasture land,  Mike calls it.  No farm animals either, just dogs and a cat.  Mike and Susan are friends with Knight Larry Balagna and his wife Sheila as they see them every other weekend.  They had started a Bunko group of 10-12 couples which doesn’t begin until October. He says that his goals are to continue to generously support the parish.
