KC’S SMOKER (KNIGHT HANDS PROJECT)

Remember when?

On Thursday evening, November 1, 2012 someone stole the Knights’ grill from church property.  Fr. Joe actually saw the grill leaving and thought to himself, “The Knights must be doing something early tomorrow morning.”  Shortly thereafter, Scott and LeeAnna Brooks gifted and delivered a smoker grill to the church in response to the television broadcast about our stolen custom made grill.  We have used this smoker ever since; especially at each fall festival.

In August 2024 the smoker was given a makeover by a few Knights that volunteered a total of 20+ hours to make it happen. Efrain Ochoa first brought up the idea in June during the Officers’ & Directors meeting to modify the smoker to make it more versatile. He approached fellow Knight Pedro Zuniga and asked if he could cut an opening on the opposite side of the smoker and add an additional door and sliding shelf. In addition to the added work requested Pedro went ahead and welded a needed step to reach the upright portion of the smoker and also welded a mesh to cover the smoke stack.

Efrain and Allen Reitmeier drilled additional holes to install new thermometer gauges.   Kenneth Horton (a non KC member) was gracious enough to cut out the KOFC #8157 steel sign with his plasma cutter that was then welded on by Pedro and his assistant.  The final touches were done by sanding and repainting the smoker and trailer with heat resistant paint. The revitalized smoker was completed in time for this past weekend’s 2024 Fall Festival in which approximately 145 turkey legs were smoked and served.  We are grateful to Efrain for his foresight to improve the smoker and to Pedro for doing the cutting and welding.  A terrific Knight Hands project.
