[dropcaps] F [/dropcaps] ifty Four hikers and volunteers turned out for the first annual Hike for Life in Duncanville, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 8157 and Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Saturday October 12 in Armstrong Park, Duncanville, TX. Registration started promptly at 8:00 am under the registration tents where the hikers signed in and turned in their sponsor donations, Hike for Life shirts were handed out to anyone who brought in $25.00 or more. A big thank you goes out to our registration volunteer workers Peter Perta, Becky Tiambeng and Donna Greenlee.

At 8:30 am Fr. Joe Lee started us off by asking God’s blessings upon us and on the Pro-Life cause. This was followed by the pledge of allegiance by the Knights of Columbus color guard, thank you Fr. Joe and color guard. Next our CPLC Pro-Life speaker Edith Ramos spoke to us about the encouraging things that are happening today on the Pro-Life side both locally and nationally. She thanked everyone who turned out on behalf of the Catholic Pro-Life Committee (CPLC) and reminded us that we still have a long way to go and to never cease praying.

The 5k hike started immediately after with nearly fifty of us mostly dressed in red with our new Hike for Life shirts walking the outside trail around the park four time for a total of 3.5 miles. According to Google 5k = 3.1 miles which took less than one hour. The course of the hike was monitored by our course marshals Nicholas Kleinhouse, Mario Tiambeng and Ramon Rivera to ensure that everyone stayed on course and for safety reasons, great job guys.

Afterwards we consumed over 140 hotdogs, chips and refreshments thanks to David Dybala and Carlos Favela our chefs. I want to thank everyone who participated and all those who volunteered to help especially the great K of C council 8157 who responded to the call, like always. A special behind the scene thanks to Andy Goza and Bill Dover for helping me get it all set up. Everyone I spoke to said that they enjoyed the event and would be back again next year. Our Hike for Life raised over $1,000.00 to help our area Crisis Pregnancy Centers.
