John Espree, June’s Knight of the Month, grew up in central Louisiana’s Evangeline Parish and moved to Texas at the age of 18. That’s why his e-mail address includes “cajun56texan75.” John and wife Bonnie started attending Holy Spirit in the early 2000s. John’s hometown is Mamou, hailed as the “Cajun Music Capital of the World.” It is home to Fred’s Lounge, which is only open Saturdays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and provides live music 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. John works for Kenworth Trucking on Irving Boulevard and has been with the company for 24 years. He says it’s the kind of job that doesn’t have set hours. “The phone can keep ringing until you leave and keeps ringing on your way home and after you get home,” he said. Bonnie is the office manager at Governmental Relation Specialists in Waxahachie. She grew up in El Paso and graduated from high school in Austin. John joined the council over the winter and jumped right in. He has helped at fish fry Fridays, cookouts and the base-ball concession stand. The Esprees have three grown children (Daniel 31, Johnny 29 and Jenny 28) and one grandchild (Jenny’s Jeremiah). When asked the obvious question for someone who has loyalties in both northern Texas and southern Louisiana – Cowboys or Saints? – John leaned toward the Saints based on recent history.
