Ernie Coy
Ernie Coy had just handed over the reigns as Grand Knight of our council in the summer of 1993. (Some mileposts to help you remember then: Nolan Ryan was putting knots on the head of Robin Ventura, and Jimmy Johnson’s Cowboys were trying to repeat as Super Bowl champs.) Ernie was thinking, “Now I can relax.” But Russell Gully asked him to fill in as Financial Secretary until a replacement for the outgoing officer could be identified. That fill-in status lasted, oh, 20 years. Ernie faithfully served in that capacity for two decades until officially being succeeded in mid-April by Peter Perta. “It’s really like having a second little job,” Ernie said. Most Knights might be familiar with a handful of that office’s duties – collecting annual dues and subsequently distributing membership cards. But the Financial Secretary also oversees all records of the individual members as Knights and works with the Treasurer on every check written by the council. Ernie joined 8157 in November 1988 at the invitation of a co-worker at AAFES, Richard Doucette (who served as Grand Knight 1989-92). He soon worked his way through the ranks as Inside Guard, Recording Secretary and Deputy Grand Knight. Ernie is a San Antonio native who came to north Texas in 1963. He and wife Claudia joined the parish in 1979. Here’s a big thanks to Ernie. Relax.
