For Chris Edwards, the council’s Knight of the Month for November, membership as a rank-and-file Knight these days is a relatively new experience. He joined the council soon after going through RCIA classes at Holy Spirit in 2004 and was a member of 8157 for only a little more than a year before serving as Deputy Grand Knight in 2006-07 and 2007-08 and Grand Knight in 2008-09 and 2009-10. He followed that with about a year’s service as the District Deputy. Chris notes that his two children were “little bitty kids” for much of that time; now that Trevor is a junior at Duncanville High and Sophie a seventh-grader at Byrd, his schedule away from work (owning and operating Beacon Signs in Duncanville) and the Knights is often dictated by their activities. “Charity begins at home,” he noted. “I’m not just a Knight; I’m an Edwards.” Council meetings, for instance, are tough for him to attend. As far as council activities, he tries to participate in those that he enjoys the most – many of them activities that were started when he was Grand Knight – like Breakfast with St. Nick, the appreciation dinner and the cookout at St. Joseph’s senior residence home in Oak Cliff. “It’s still about helping people,” Chris said. “That’s why I joined.”
